Mastering Addition

This week in class we focused on improving our addition skills.

Kindergarten students were introduced to 2-digit and 3-digit addition (with no re-grouping). They fell in love with these "1st grade" math problems! Here are the steps we learned.

   34
+ 12
--------

1.) First read the problem (this is great practice in recognizing and "reading" large numbers).
       "Thirty-four plus twelve equals"

2.) Find the sign and touch it with your finger. This helps to double check if we are adding or subtracting.

3.) Go to the far side-away from the sign. This will be very important once students start solving problems with regrouping (or borrowing).
This means we will start with 4 + 2.

4.) Add the far top number to the far bottom number. Write the answer under the bottom number.
   34
+12
--------
    6
5.) Move to the left and add the top number and the bottom number. Write the answer under the bottom number.
  34
+12
--------
 46

The children have loved working on these problems! Here are some pictures of them hard at work!

We didn't forget about Pre-K- they worked on single digit addition with answers up to 10. We even had a little fun and used a crafty addition to figure out our problems!

Important Dates and Reminders:

Zoo: The Zoo is TUESDAY! Please remember to pack a lunch for the field trip. Right now it looks like we will be having a beautiful sunny day. Remember a hat, shorts, socks, tennis shoes and sunblock! Whew- I know it's a lot but it will make the trip all the better!

Sports Day: Please send in a plain white T-Shirt OR $3.00 so we may create our sports day shirts. The shirt does NOT need to be new and may have light stains. We will be tye dying them and decorating them so you won't even be able to tell!

Easter Party: Our Easter party will be on Thursday April 17th. We are asking each family to send in:

  • 12 plastic easter eggs filled with candy and TAPED shut.
  • A basket or bucket to collect eggs in during the hunt.
  •  $3.00 to help cover the cost of food, treats and crafts the students will be completing during the party.

Room 12 has a wonderful tradition of dying eggs and then using them to create a yummy egg salad sandwich.

Thank you for all of the support you have given through this school year- we are getting close to summer! I hope you and your family are enjoying the warmer weather and are getting excited for the last 9 weeks of this school year!
