Come One Come All to OPEN HOUSE!

Open House is tomorrow from 6-7 pm at Reece Academy!

The children are very excited to show you around our room and explain what we have been working on!

All families are encouraged to attend!

You may even get to meet my little one!

This week we finished up Black History Month with a school wide celebration.
Drama company performed the story "Abiyoyo".
Here is a link to a video of the story being read and sang by Pete Seeger.
The Dance Troupe performed the song "Dream Girls".

The teachers even did a special tribute to Micheal Jackson!

Here is a video that Mrs. Ramdass, our Technology Specialist put together about the assembly!

In our classroom the students and I were very excited to add new friends to our spelling groups!

The spelling test from last week and this week will be out to view for Open House.

Our friends that are not quite ready for spelling words enjoyed fishing for letters and identifying the sounds they make!
Students enjoyed "Buddy Reading" this week and practicing their stories with a friend.

Pre-K also learned a few strategies for addition this week!
Practicing with part-part-whole mats (with funny faces)!
Moving right along to vertical addition- boy are these friends smart!
When doing addition problems with you Pre-K child here are the steps we follow with written problems:

1.) Read the problem out loud 3+3 =  (Three plus three equals)
2.) Draw the dots (Child should draw 3 dots under the 1st 3 and 3 dots under the 2nd 3)
3.) Count the dots (Child should TOUCH each dot and count out loud (1,2,3,4,5,6)
4.) Write the answer (3+3= 6)

Once we have been doing problems for a few weeks they will memorize some of the problems or find that it is faster to count on their fingers- which is great! We want them to get quicker and quicker but still have several strategies to use once the problems get harder!

Continue the amazing work you have been doing with your little ones and I hope to see you tomorrow night!
Love,
Mrs. Richardson

100 Days Smarter

This week was quite a busy week! We celebrated our 100th day of school, Valentines Day and Donuts with Dad. Below are some pictures from our busy week!

We started our 100th Day with special 100 Day workstations.

The children tried their best to help each other complete a puzzle with 100 pieces.

We saw how long it would take to stack 100 dominoes.

We experimented with stacking 100 cups.

We created hats that held 100 stickers.

We created necklaces that had 100 fruit loops on them.

We made a delicious trail mix that had 100 pieces in each bag!

We had a Hersey Kiss scavenger hunt- There were 100 kisses hidden around the room....

We took turns finding them...

and then matching the number on the bottom of our kiss to our 100 chart!

We answered the questions "I wish I had 100 ______" and "I would never want 100 ______"

Pre-K students traced their numbers 1-100

And kinder students wrote the numbers 1-100 all by themselves!

It was a very busy and very fun day!

Later in the week we were lucky enough to have another celebration- Valentines Day!

We started out Valentines day off with Donuts with Dad.

It was wonderful seeing so many families come to school to spend time with their children. Here are just a few of the daddies that we saw on Friday!

Later in the day we celebrated Valentines day in several ways!

We practiced our patterning with giant conversation hearts....

We used real conversation hearts to practice estimating and counting out large numbers.

We each had a cup of conversation hearts and we graphed how many of each color were in our cups!

Finally we ended the day by passing out our Valentines into some pretty creative boxes!

I hope that you and your loved ones enjoyed your holiday weekend! I know I sure loved celebrating my little ones 1st Valentines Day!

Hello February!

This week we finished our Chinese New Year unit and began getting ready for our 100th day of school and Valentines Day!

Below are some peaks into our week!

On Monday we learned all about Chinese letters 1-12! Pre-K placed the missing numbers in order and kinder students actually practiced addition with Chinese numbers!

To help us keep warm this week we worked with winter hats....and added some numbers! :)

Pre-K recognized numbers 1-15 and placed them in order.

Kinder students used the same hats but grouped them in pairs. After grouping the two random hats they had to decide which was the largest number in each group and placed it on top. When they finished that task I help them to create addition or subtraction problems using each hat! Some students had problems as hard as 15-12 and they did great!

In preparation for Valentines Day we are creating "Heart Creatures" in class! The students are experimenting with different sizes of hearts to create an animal or monster! So far I have seen them create a tiger, a ghost, a monster ghost, and a butterfly! When each child is finished we will display them for Donuts with Dad on Friday!

This week we have been creative with "Inside Recess"! Students learned several new games.

 Playing "Pass the Bean Bag"

Practicing our handwriting, letter/sound recognition and math in shaving cream-always a favorite!

I taught the students in room #11 and room #12 how to play duck duck goose!

We enjoyed reading a wonderful book this week called "The Mitten"

After reading the story we had a blast creating puppets for each of the characters and then re-telling the story as a class!
